How Does SoGEA Work? (Upgrading your Business Broadband)
As the UK’s copper network continues to phase out, it’s only second nature to want the best speeds possible for your business’s broadband connection.
You may have already heard of the typical broadband connections associated with both business and residential addresses: FTTC (Fibre-to-the-Cabinet) and ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). These both come with speeds capped at 80Mbps and 24 Mbps respectively. Both connections are great for running on a business premise, however, depending on your industry, it may be wiser to seek an upgrade to the newest available connection sooner than later.
SoGEA (Single Order Generic Ethernet Access), is the newest replacement for the copper/analogue lines being phased out across the UK. The current FTTC network will be phased out before 2025, meaning the switch to SoGEA is mandatory for UK businesses.
The running costs of SoGEA are lower going into the long run, as this type of connection can overlay any VOIP/SIP services you have set up within your business’s network. The main standout factor of switching to SoGEA is the removal of a voice connection - This is purely a data service, so your bill each month for this service will ultimately be lower than what you currently pay for FTTC.
Unless you are running on an existing FTTP (Fibre-to-the-Premises) connection, SoGEA will remove the hassle of requiring a landline phone connection, saving you money essentially! (Let’s not forget that as a business you may/may not need handsets to operate, depending on the type of telephone system you have set up there).
SoGEA is now available to over 30 million premises across the UK, so there’s a good chance it will be available in your area. Logically, upgrading to a dedicated high-speed data connection plan is the cheapest way of staying online. Remember, by 2025, all copper telephone lines in the UK will be switched off, meaning your business will need to have a setup in place to be able to make calls over the internet.
