BT Again Facing Inquiries Over Openreach Subsidiary

Exactly one year after Ofcom had ordered the separation of BT and Openreach, the deal still hasn’t been done. Now the company is facing fresh inquiries about the matter, which is deemed to stimulate investment in its network.

In case you didn’t already know, Openreach are the firm that are connecting broadband lines across the UK and maintain most UK homes with Fibre technology.

The full split would entail 32,000 workers to move and work under the new identity, without any branding from BT, even then, Openreach is widely associated with the Telecoms giant, without the BT logo on their marketing, it could prove disappointing in future sales.

The matter has come to life again as BT has been continuously making all the decisions as to where to invest. Openreach carried out these plans but none of the other telecoms companies connected across the UK were informed of these changes. Meaning Fibre was being targeted to be invested in regions, with local companies being unaware of the changes to business.

The obvious reason for the necessary action is to increase competition in the industry, as BT hold a noticeable monopoly in their number of homes under their services and sales value.

BT has ongoing plans to heavily invest into upgrading broadband, however states they would require tax cuts and regulatory changes to fund an upgrade, which could deliver speeds ten times as fast as customers currently use.

For customers based in homes and business, it means that Openreach can carry out operations in the view of the entire industry, and not in BT’s view, who have been delaying investment into connecting the rest of the UK. BT already own around 40% of the market value in telecommunications, and the new regulation is likely to make service more competitive, as more incumbent and smaller companies will find it easier to expand their services across regions.
