Free Wi-Fi and phone calls to be rolled out in Birmingham
The devices will be placed around city streets, with plenty of new features that will surely replace the red phone boxes we are all familiar with
Ever used a phone box in public? Surely that’s happened for all of us at some point, now it’s time for an upgrade. Starting unofficially in London last year, BT brought a few of the devices to the capital’s streets, bringing speeds in testing of up to 1Gbps.
With a range of roughly 100m, it will suit commuters and students who may struggle to afford high value phones and contracts where Wi-Fi accessibility is higher quality. The project will also be funded by BTs advertising, with 6 locations already set for installation in Birmingham.
The key features include:
Free ultrafast Wi-Fi using your personal device, Access to maps, directions, city services from the in-built tablet
Mobile and landline calls free of charge, international calls will come with a charge (this rate is currently unknown).
USB Charging – Two ports available
999 Emergency red button
Since the initial release, over 88,000 have subscribed in Leeds and London areas through the InLink features, in addition, more than 419,000 free calls have been made since installation.
To be able to use the service however, you must have an iPhone no earlier than the iPhone 5, or either the iPad Mini or Air/Pro
Another cool area within the 5G rollout, and with such improved accessibility across the city, it’s a good indicator that even the most rural areas of the UK can expect better speeds and connections, possibly? Stay updated for more!
