Broadband Speeds Across the UK - How does your City Rank Up?
Broadband Speeds can be so detrimental to a business, and can lose employees 45 minutes to an hour of their working day. Depending on your location, the speeds you deal with can be very different to the next Town, Village or City. So how do you match up?
Firstly let’s take a look at the map for some major cities:
Manchester, London, Leeds and Bradford
The the more red an area is, the slower the speeds are in that location.
What is most striking is how slow broadband is in the middle of City Centres, as this is where most activity is carried out over WiFi and 4G.
This creates the argument that new-startups should be re-considering where to set up their premises, as the value of being in popular areas, being great with the potential for more sales and customer etc. The possibility of much slower internet and broadband poses a productivity risk, which can waste valuable time for staff who may need to load contracts, websites and apps.
Most recently the new regulations for minimum Broadband speeds came through from Ofcom - Which included the rule that new customers who recently signed up could opt out of their contracts without penalty if they weren’t receiving the broadband speeds they were initially promised.
Let’s just say some locations have it a little better off than others…
Just for example, Abdon Avenue, just south of Birmingham City Centre boasts an average speed of 265.89Mbps. Meanwhile, Greenmeadows Park in Bamfurlong, Gloucester can only average 0.14Mbps. Now obviously with all of the new regulations in place, it’ll be highly likely some customers in poor areas will be taking advantage to gain access to the new minimum speeds.
It just goes to show that there are so many “undiscovered” areas that Broadband Providers need to improve on, as it’s only fair that a City Dweller should get the same speed as a Countryside Lover, right?
