Phone Call Anxiety - Answering the Phone an "Impossible Task" for some People
Whether it’s scanning through the contact options for a business or hearing your phone buzz repeatedly. You won’t be a stranger to the overwhelming anxiety that can appear when you’re faced with answering a phone call.
The Most Common type of call we have all been scared of is the dreaded “Phone Interview”, where instead of going to the workplace, a member of staff will contact you and interview you over the line. The problem most of us face is figuring - what is the best way to show yourself off? How does one express their personality without being visible to the interviewer?
Nowadays, it is even deemed rude to call unexpectedly - i.e. Calling without texting first, unexpected phone calls, more so from numbers we haven’t seen before, can be very hard to answer without stumbling on our words or having the confidence to ask why someone is calling. This is why it takes a special kind of person to work as a receptionist - As sometimes you have to turn away cold-callers, or those who are asking to speak to those in charge.
In such a smartphone driven generation, it’d be daft to say that we have socializing with our phones, but the devices have led to severe social anxiety in many younger people - However, texting is apparently the easiest thing in the world for them. Texting gives you time to figure what you’d like to say, without the awkward wait for a response like when you are face-to-face or over the phone.
Millennials often shy away also, from leaving voicemail messages, or anything related to speaking over the phone, although this is much more often outside of work. When we need help with something, anything - Our first thought is always to email or use a live-chat. A phone call however is the quickest and most efficient way to solve a problem, that is why it’s been around the longest - It always works!
